Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT)

A multiple sleep latency test (MSLT) is a tool used to measure the extent of sleepiness in an individual.

During an MSLT, a patient is given a 20 minute opportunity to fall asleep while in bed, in a dark and quiet room. These opportunities to sleep, or “naps” are given at two-hour intervals, usually beginning two hours after awakening from a night of sleep in the laboratory. During the naps, the patient’s brain waves are monitored to determine if sleep occurred, how long it took to fall asleep, and what stages of sleep occurred. An MSLT should be preceded by an overnight sleep study to allow the nap findings to be interpreted accurately. Typically, the MSLT is completed by 4:00 pm following the overnight sleep study.

How will having this test help me?

The Multiple Sleep Latency Test provides important information necessary to diagnose some sleep disorders. The results of the MSLT are also useful in the treatment of complaints of excessive daytime sleepiness.
